SUSTAINABILITY, SOLUTIONS, AND SUDS

Who: IAAP in partnership with West Side Tractor will host three industry professionals: John Gilbeck (Global Product Lead for Electrification at John Deere), Steve Jones (West Side Tractor Facilities Manager), and Don Mikulic (Curator of the Weiss Earth Science Museum).
What: Speakers will discuss hot button sustainability challenges and solutions within the mining industry.
Where: The event will be held at West Side Tractor in Lisle, IL. Followed by Social Networking at Ike and Oak Brewing Co in Woodridge, IL

MWRD's TUNNEL AND RESERVIOR PLAN (TARP) and THORNTON QUARRY TOUR

Who: Chicago Metropolitan Water Reclamation District’s (MWRD) and Heidelberg's Thornton Quarry
What: Tour of the Mainstream Pumping Station and the McCook Quarry reservoir to learn about how the these facilities that are helping to address an ongoing problem of contaminants accumulating in the rivers, canals, and Lake Michigan. After, participants visited Thornton Quarry. Both Vulcan's McCook Quarry and Heidelberg Thornton Quarry have won state and national reclamation awards for the role they play in the MWRD's TARP system.

OZINGA CNG FILLING STATION AND STORAGE PLANT

Who: Ozinga, Producer Member.
What: Tour of two compressor filling stations and natural gas storage. These stations use renewable natural gas (less expensive alternative to diesel fuel) from a nearby landfill and serves Ozinga mixer trucks, local waste haulers, and other industries.

THELEN SAND AND GRAVEL SOLAR PV SYSTEM

Who: Thelen Sand and Gravel, Producer Member
What: Learn about solar integration and how it has worked for Thelen. Attendees were given an opportunity to tour the ground-mounted array and hear from company stakeholders about the key project motivations and results. Attendees will also learn more about the pertinent technical, financial and operational aspects of the investment from SunPeak, the company who developed and constructed the Thelen solar system.

LAKE KATHERINE NATURE CENTER AND BOTANICAL GARDENS

Who: The IAAP in partnership with Sara Barnas, Lake Katherine’s Naturalist
What: Tour of Lake Katherine's native landscaping, natural meadows, and pollinator gardens Followed by the tour of a local installation at the Palos Heights Library or City Hall. Sara discussed how the organization provides free and low-cost consultation services including assessing a property and providing step-by-step guidance on how to install suitable enhancements such as native landscaping, pollinator gardens and native meadows. If the area has quality habitat, Lake Katherine staff can offer guidance on installing bird boxes, bat houses, bee blocks and even basking logs for turtles if a water source is present.
